A while back, we wrote a blog on the sweetest apple (hint: Fuji, gala, honeycrisp). Today we’re going to talk about the tartest apple. If you like the apple to bite you back when you crunch into it, you’ll love these tart apples.
Granny Smith
The tartest apple award goes to Granny Smith, according to the Apple Sweetness Scale, also known as the “Sweet-to-Tart Chart.” This is basically a visual representation ranking different apple varieties from sweetest to tartest. This allows consumers to compare flavor profiles so they can choose the best apple for their needs. In general, Fuji is considered the sweetest and Granny Smith is considered the tartest apple on the scale.
A great baking apple, the Granny Smith is very acidic, which means it holds its shape well when put in the oven at high temperatures. It’s this tartness that makes it ideal for baking recipes, particularly apple pie.
We don’t grow or sell Granny Smith apples here at Robinette’s, but we can sure appreciate their contributions to the world of tart apples!
Pink Lady
Featuring a firm texture, this pretty pink apple is high in sugar and acids, making it a favorite for its hints of tartness. Because Pink Lady apples oxidize slowly, they don’t brown as quickly when sliced. This is why you see it in so many pre-packaged apple slices. This versatile apple is great for fresh snacks, salads, sauces, pairing, or just crunching into.
This variety has a sweet-tart taste with a crisp bite and effervescent finish, making it a refreshing choice for many people. We do sell Pink Lady apples here.
Braeburn
Aromatic and tart, Braeburn apples are well suited for baking because they hold up well to the required extra sugar. This variety was discovered in 1952 in New Zealand, a seedling of Lady Hamilton and possibly Granny Smith. Known for its sweet-tart flavor and firm texture, Braeburn apples can be stored for many months.
Medium to large in size, Braeburn apples are refreshing and crunchy, with hints of citrus, pear, and cinnamon. We also sell Braeburn apples here.
