This time, we’re aiming the spotlight on the SweeTango apple. A good source of fiber, the SweeTango was developed in the late 20th century at the University of Minnesota. It’s grown and protected under strict regulations for consistent levels of quality. The name SweeTango® is the registered brand name of the Minneiska apple, created by combining “sweet” and “tang” as an homage to the apple’s sweet-tart flavor.

SweeTango is a cross between the honeycrisp apple and the Zelstar!® apple, also developed through the University of Minnesota and beloved for its spice-filled flavor and crisp flesh. SweeTango has a long shelf life, and can be used in a variety of cooked, fresh, and preserved preparations.

All About SweeTango Apples

This medium to large varietal has a round to conical shape featuring flat shoulders that taper to a narrow base. The skin is thick, smooth, glossy, and taut, with a lightly textured feel and a pale yellow-green base with large patches of bright blushing and striping. The flesh of the SweeTango is firm and dense with a good crunch when bitten into. Comparable to the sweetness of a honeycrisp, the SweeTango has a balanced, sweet, tangy flavor with spice, citrus, apple cider, and brown sugar notes.
