With roots in Fujisaki, Japan in the 1930s, these bi-colored apples feature a creamy, fine-grain, white flesh offset by a sweet juicy taste reminiscent of freshly-pressed apple juice. The Fuji apple is a cross between the Red Delicious and Virginia Ralls Janet, and is one of the more common apples in this country.
One of the sweetest apples you can buy, Fuji are round to ovate in shape with a slightly-lopsided appearance. Available year-round, the peak season for Fuji is late fall through winter. Eager to know more? In this week’s apple spotlight, we are featuring the Fuji apple.
All About Fuji Apples
The semi-thick skin of the Fuji is waxy and smooth with a yellow-green base. It’s covered in red-pink blush and striping with a crisp, pale ivory or white flesh. Naturally crunchy and low in acid, Fuji apples bring a balanced yet mild sweet-tart flavor offset by notes of citrus and honey.
An excellent source of vitamin C, Fuji apples are packed with antioxidants that not only boost the immune system, but increase collagen production and protect your body against environmental damage as well. Fuji apples also have lots of fiber to stimulate digestion, and have some amounts of vitamin A, iron, calcium, potassium, and folate.
