What are you going to do with all those leftover apples from U-Pick season? Instead of making apple pie (been there, done that), kick things up a notch and try your hand at apple pastries. Here are some simple recipes to try with the kids or just on your own. Your house will be smelling amazing in no time, and when you try a bite of your creations, you’ll be glad you took the time to use those apples in a creative way.
Quick Apple Turnovers
You only need four ingredients to make these mouth-watering apple turnovers.
You will need:
- 5 apples
- 1 lb. puff pastry
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 egg
Directions:
- Peel and slice apples; set aside.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface, cutting the pastry sheet into eight equal pieces.
- Place four to five slices of apple in the middle of each, topping with a spoonful of sugar.
- Bake at 415°F for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
Apple Cinnamon Pastry
These pastries make the perfect fall breakfast treat. You can even make them ahead of time and bake right before eating.
You will need:
- 2 tbsp. sugar
- ¼ tsp. cinnamon
- 1 1/2 cup diced apples, skin on
- 3 tbsp. raisins
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 package of store-bought puff pastry sheets
Frosting:
- 1 tbsp. powdered sugar
- 1-2 tsp. heavy cream
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 400F.
- Combine sugar with cinnamon in a small bowl; set aside.
- Add apples, cinnamon sugar, and raisins to medium bowl, tossing well to combine; set aside.
- Beat the egg until combined.
- Roll out puff pastry onto floured surface, cutting into 4x 3 rectangles.
- Brush the egg wash with a pastry brush around the edges of each rectangle.
- Fill half with a scoop of the apple mixture.
- Fold second half over and seal shut with the tines of a fork.
- Brush pastry tops with egg wash, making some slits for ventilation.
- Transfer to a parchment-lined cookie sheet.
- Bake for 30- to 35 minutes.
- Remove from oven; allow to cool slightly.
- Whisk the powdered sugar and heavy cream in a small bowl until smooth.
- Drizzle the glaze on top of the pastries in a zig-zag motion with a fork.
