Today the spotlight shines on the Braeburn apple. Originating in New Zealand in the 1950s, Braeburn apples still account for 40 percent of the entire apple production of that country. Today, it’s one of the more popular varieties and is grown all over the country. It’s no wonder Braeburn is so beloved. It’s easy to grow, it produces heavily, and it stores well.

What truly sets it apart is its flavor, which makes the flavors of Delicious and Golden Delicious pale in comparison. Aromatic, with balanced sugar and acidity levels, the Braeburn offers a crisp, sweet and refreshing taste.

All About Braeburn Apples

This small- to medium-sized varietal averages up to seven centimeters in diameter, with a round to conical appearance. Their skins are thin but tough, which makes them resistant to bruising. The yellow-green base features large patches of red-pink blush and even striping that can be translucent.

The flesh of the Braeburn is ivory to cream-colored, with a firm, coarse crisp and crunch. This apple snaps clean with each bite, featuring an aromatic, complex flavor with a rich, cider-like undertone of nutmeg, cinnamon, pear, and citrus notes.

What Are Braeburn Apples Good For?

Offering a good source of fiber, Vitamin C, and antioxidants, Braeburn apples also contain a lot of potassium to balance fluid levels, as well as calcium to build strong teeth and bones. They have vitamin A for healthy organ functioning, vitamin E for inflammation reduction, and other nutrients that include zinc, copper, magnesium, manganese, and phosphorus.

Braeburn apples are best for:

  • Eating fresh thanks to their firm, crisp, sweet-tart flavor with a hint of spice.
  • Baking: Because they hold their shape well and do not release a lot of juice when heated, these apples are excellent for pies, tarts, cobblers, cakes, and muffins.
  • Adding to other dishes, such as salads, smoothies, toppings on pancakes and waffles, and yogurt parfaits. You can also roast or sauté them with onions and spices, and they pair well with pork dishes.
  • Toppings for oatmeal and cereal
  • Packing in lunchboxes: Braeburn apples pack well in lunchboxes because they resist bruising well.
